I understand there may be some variance in quality issues across the brand because of different staffing but brand consistency is important. Each room should meet the same expectations of offerings. HIEx seems terribly concerned with making sure there are cinnamon rolls at the breakfast lounge every morning but, if that's HIEx's idea of brand-building, that just isn't that important to travelers.
2. Refrigerator and microwave in every room.
1. Guest-usable electric outlets on every nightstand.
Comfortable bed. Room was clean and everything looked well maintained. Front desk people were friendly and helpful. I had a question about a charge on my bill which was handled quickly and efficiently. The shower was wonderful and towels were thick and soft.
The Holiday Inn Express (HIEx) line of hotels is inconsistent. The most critical issue is an inconsistent offering of room amenities. Most notably a refrigerator and microwave. Some HIEx have a refrigerator and microwave and some do not. ALL OF THEM should have an in-room refrigerator and microwave. It's standard for hotels in this bracket/category. It is frustrating to show-up to a hotel expecting a refrig and finding that the rooms at this hotel are lacking. (The Valpo HIEx does NOT have in-room refrig and micro.) I travel on a weekly basis and use many "2-3 star" hotels. I have been burned on 3 different occasions/locations by HIEx. I don't have time to do serious research to figure out if a particular HIEx has a refrig/micro or not. (Every Hampton Inn I have gone to offers refrig/micro. Every Comfort Inn. Every Fairfield Inn.) One other crucial failing at the Valpo HIEx: There are no usable outlets at the nightstands (just a standard 2-outlet box for the light and clock). You can't charge your cellphone (or run anything electrical) by the bed. That is unacceptable in 2017. (I unplugged the clock to use that outlet but c'mon!)
Our daughter is a Valparaiso University soccer player so we are here quite often and there are plenty of hotels in the area. This Holiday Inn is always our choice due to the outstanding people, service, & amenities. Clean rooms, friendly staff, excellent breakfast. Not certain if coincidence, but the majority of our stays we even get the same suite.
I'm not using HIEx anymore. There are other equal offerings out there that are far more consistent on what they provide in the room... where consistency matters the most.
Pretty simple, huh?
We checked in to the Holiday Inn for the wedding. After some initial confusion on where the entrance to their parking lot, we found that there was ample parking even though the hotel was full. We were in the room with one King. With the bed, the pull out couch, and a cot we were able to fit 4 people and not feel cramped. The couch and cot were somewhat flat. One strange thing about the bathroom was that the shower only had a small lip separating it from the rest of the bathroom. This meant that we laid down several towels on the bathroom floor to prevent it from becoming flooded. The breakfast buffet in the morning had a good variety and was delicious.
Clean room and friendly staff. I enjoy the biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Hot water is a bit aggressive in the shower. Beware.
If it says HIEx on the outside - make sure it says HIEx on the inside:
